The Best Guide Ever!

The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life, I will advise you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8

Have you ever been lost, whether physically or maybe mentally?  It is during those times when you just weren’t sure where you are.

I have!  In both circumstances that is for sure. Several years ago I went on a mission trip to Peru. At one point the group split into two smaller groups and headed out.  The further the group I was in got from the other group and the higher we got into the Andes Mountain the more we became aware that we were lost.  You know there aren’t any street signs up on those dry dusty roads and goggle earth wasn’t even up and running at that time.  The only life we found at one point was a pack of llamas and they refused to give good directions.

It did get a little frustrating but eventually we found the village we were looking for and the rest of the trip we laughed about it.

But it is those times when we are lost mentally that seems to cause more of a struggle.  Maybe it is in the not knowing what the next step in life should be, what direction a ministry should take or maybe it is closer to the heart of parenting, raising that child and making the correct choices.
This is where today's verse gives me a pause of thankfulness.  God says He will guide, advise us and watch over us.  Can I get a collective sigh of relief?

Guide- Have you ever been on an adventure with a guide?  They point out the best places to put your foot when the terrain gets rocky.  They direct your eyes to the best vantage points and they show you the things that an untrained eye would normally miss.  God is telling us that He is our guide and He not only knows the best foot placements but also knows the best vantage points and what we might miss along the way if left to ourselves.

Advise- God is the ultimate advisor!  He is better than the college professor that helped you coordinate your classes for obtaining the degree you longed for.  He is better that the financial pro that helps you put your portfolio together so that funds will not run out for retirement.  His advising doesn’t rely on stock markets or academic requirements.  God knows the BIG picture and advises you for what is the perfect, very best for your life to bring Him honor and glory! God only advises what is best with no risk to your future with him.

Watching over-When my boys were little I would watch over them with a close eye.  I would see when they were headed in the wrong direction and reroute their steps.  However there were times when I would let my mind wander and my watch over them wasn’t as on point.  They would veer way off track before I could correct them quickly enough.  With God that isn’t so.  His watch is constant and doesn’t get altered by things fighting for his attention.  He is ever seeing!  God watches over us without delay, interruption or slackness.

God sees the big picture! And for that I am so thankful.  I am called like a child to his parents to listen the God’s voice. God is and always will be the best guide, advisor and one to watch over me!

Are you allowing Him that role in your life?  Are you listening to His voice?

May we all be open to allowing God to do in our lives what He alone can do best!

Second-hand or Active Participant?

Many of you know Greenwood is a football town (ok that’s an understatement) and me having two boys, well, I’m a football mom.  We, along with many of you, attend the games and cheer our team on with great enthusiasm.
On one particular evening, my parents met us for one of the games and even brought a friend with them.  Now this lady is a BIG sports fan.  She will talk with you about any sport, especially if the Razorbacks are involved.  She is very opinionated when it comes to a favored team and she follows them regularly.

Ok I know, you are saying what’s the big deal with that?  Don’t we have lots of women around our town that are just as big a fan?  Yes, we do but here is the deal.  This lady who is in her mid 60’s had never until that night ever been a witness to a live football game.  She had never sat in the stands with hundreds of other fans cheering her team to victory.  The only experience she had was second hand through a TV or radio.  That night she lived it.  She actively participated and found a thrill that she had been missing when sitting in her own living room during a game.

As I left that stadium and even until now, I kept thinking about how so many times we live our Christian life second-handedly never experiencing the real life in Christ.  Sometimes we might grow accustom to our “living room” and choose to not participate in worship, a bible study or true freedom from strongholds because we’ve accepted that’s how life is.  Oh but Christ promises so much more if we experience Him and take an active part.

Are you an active participant or do you settle for second-hand?

Are You Downy Fresh?

My friend and I have taken up bike riding as a form of exercise accountability.  We have enjoyed some wonderful talks and times of getting to know each other over the course of the summer.  There were days when we would barely make it down our road and back. Now there are times when we log 15 miles on one ride.  Over the months we have logged over 300 miles on our bikes and dread the days when we must move inside due to cold weather.

On several of our rides I noticed that when cars passed or the trail would narrow my friend would always move in behind me.  Many times she would stay there long after the car had passed or the passage widened.  Finally one day she laughed and said “I love to follow you.  You always smell so downy fresh.”  Although I felt smelly due to sweat, we had a good giggled over her comment.

As I thought more about her comment I began to think about our walks as Christians.  Are those following behind us taking in our freshness?  Are we taking in the newness of God’s Word and letting it diffuse out through our lives on to others?

2 Corinthians 2:14-15 says, “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.  For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing.”

Are those following you enjoying your fragrance?  When the stuff of this world takes place it is so easy to forget to bath in the “laundry detergent” of the Word of God.

I want to encourage you to dig into God’s Word so that as others follow you they will notice that you always smell fresh.  Fresh from the Word of God that is…and the other doesn’t hurt either!  LOL
